THE GREAT MAIL RACE: Our class randomly received a letter from a school in Minnesota to participate in the Great Mail Race. We will return a letter to them next week. Each of our students chose a school in a different state to write a letter to and our classroom should receive letters from 28 states! Everyone is pretty excited about it!

MATH   - Mrs. Custer

We have spent the past week reviewing fraction work, especially multiplication and division of fractions within story problems.  I think we will be ready for our test next week.  Speaking of tests, any student who is being given a chance to try again on the standards from math test 1 (adding and subtracting fractions) and / or test 2  (place value) was given a letter from me in class on January 7.  The tests will be on January 19 and 26.

BLOWERS WRITING:
This week we worked on the standard W.5.4 -writing for purpose, task, and audience. Students wrote 2 letters. A thank you note to Grandma for the pencils they received for Christmas or birthday as a gift and one to a friend telling about this gift.  We discussed how the tone and language of the letter to a friend would be different that the one to their grandma.  The letters were wonderful with a lot of description to grandma detailing the wonders of their regular, everyday pencils!

READING: with Mrs. Blowers
We began book club this week. Students are working in groups to read and discuss their books. I come sit in with groups daily. We are focusing on vocabulary building, various comprehension strategies, and character development. SRI and Dibels testing is in a couple weeks.

Social Studies with Mrs. Custer

We are finished with our study of the early empires of Western Africa.  Next week we will move on to early English colonies in America.
Science with Mrs. Blowers

We began our unit "Objects in the Sky". This first section is about why we have seasons.

 Spelling:
The Lesson 13 test was Thursday. The new skill for lesson 14 is the spelling of words that have the "ow/ow" sound/spelling.   Students know they should study the activities we do in class to study for the test as well as practice the words on the list in the spelling tab.
