  MATH: R-P 2-7
  READING: Begin reading your February book!


MATH   - Mrs. Custer 
We are tackling a brand new concept involving patterns when multiplying by powers of 10, including when multiplying with decimals.  R-P 2-7 is due Monday.  If you are having trouble, please note that and we will keep at it on Monday

BLOWERS WRITING: 
  Students are wrapping up their "Snowman" drafts. (Standard W.5.3 -writing a narrative.) 
Students are working to incorporate at least 5 of the sentence types that we practiced, some sound words, and most are writing from a snowman's point of view. Students know they have their individual goals for writing to be thinking about as they write.We will be writing a persuasive piece next.

READING: with Mrs. Blowers
 Book clubs will be mostly complete by the end of next week.  The standards we are discussing and focusing on are making inferences using text clues and background knowledge, vocabulary building and using new words in our own sentences as well as finding synonyms/antonyms, summarizing, and comparing/contrasting ideas and characters.
 
Social Studies with Mrs. Custer

We know all about some early European colonies, as well as new vocabulary to help us as we study settlements in the New World.  Please review your notes from this week to go over primary vs. secondary sources, push and pull factors and colonies vs. settlements.
Science with Mrs. Blowers 
We began investigating the reason for moon phases and the different phases, how it orbits Earth, and are beginning to discuss lunar and solar eclipses.
Spelling:     

The Lesson 15 test was Friday. The new skill for lesson 16 is the spelling words that include blends (bl, scr, etc) Students know they should study the activities we do in class to study for the test as well as practice the words on the list in the spelling tab.

READING: Be sure you are reading a minimum of 20 minutes daily! 


MATH   - Mrs. Custer 
Please check PowerSchool over the weekend if you are interested in your unit 3 math test grades.  They will all be entered before the end of the weekend.  A reminder that next week Tuesday is the place value retest and next Thursday are our Mad Minute math fact tests. The goal is 30 problems in one minute for each of the operations.

We had a lot of special activities that occurred during our usual social studies time this week, but we did work on informational reading strategies from chapter 6 of our textbook as we learned about the early English colonies of Roanoke, Jamestown and Plymouth.

Science with Mrs. Blowers 
Science tests will come home Monday or Tuesday. Monday we begin our section focusing on the moon's role in our solar system.

 Spelling:     
The Lesson 14 test will be Monday. The new skill for lesson 15 the spelling of words that include diagraphs. (wh, che, etc).  Students know they should study the activities we do in class to study for the test as well as practice the words on the list in the spelling tab.

MATH   - Mrs. Custer 
The fifth graders have been working very hard since Christmas on story problems that involve multiplication and division of fractions.  Our test will be next week.  Their homework this weekend is worksheet 3-12  (#13 - 21).
Students also took the Delta math test and you will see these results at conferences.

We are focusing on vocabulary building, various comprehension strategies, and character development. We took the SRI test- you will see the results at conferences.  Dibels testing is next week.

We started a new unit this week on the first of the early English colonies in America.  

Science with Mrs. Blowers 
We completed lessons for first section of this unit which primarily focuses on why we have seasons and temperature differences. It is because the Earth is tilted on its axis and the amount of direct sunlight a given area receives as it revolves around the Earth. The test will be next Friday.

 Spelling:

THE GREAT MAIL RACE: Our class randomly received a letter from a school in Minnesota to participate in the Great Mail Race. We will return a letter to them next week. Each of our students chose a school in a different state to write a letter to and our classroom should receive letters from 28 states! Everyone is pretty excited about it!

MATH   - Mrs. Custer 

We have spent the past week reviewing fraction work, especially multiplication and division of fractions within story problems.  I think we will be ready for our test next week.  Speaking of tests, any student who is being given a chance to try again on the standards from math test 1 (adding and subtracting fractions) and / or test 2  (place value) was given a letter from me in class on January 7.  The tests will be on January 19 and 26.

BLOWERS WRITING: 
 This week we worked on the standard W.5.4 -writing for purpose, task, and audience. Students wrote 2 letters. A thank you note to Grandma for the pencils they received for Christmas or birthday as a gift and one to a friend telling about this gift.  We discussed how the tone and language of the letter to a friend would be different that the one to their grandma.  The letters were wonderful with a lot of description to grandma detailing the wonders of their regular, everyday pencils!

We began book club this week. Students are working in groups to read and discuss their books. I come sit in with groups daily. We are focusing on vocabulary building, various comprehension strategies, and character development. SRI and Dibels testing is in a couple weeks.
