HOMEWORK:     
MATH: Check the planner                                                                                                                                               
Book Project:  Due March 3rd.
Students have another book chosen and should be reading.

MATH:    
There are math tutorials and practice in the order of lessons in the MATH Tab
 
We have been practicing dividing 4 digit dividends with decimals by 1 and 2 digit divisors with decimals including when needing to add zero to the dividend. 
 
LANGUAGE ARTS 
Writing: We are writing a newspaper called The Hawkeye Press using a google form. Each student is writing interview questions and then will interview someone and write this up for the paper. Students are also working in pairs to write a true or fictional account of an event that sounds true with a partner. We are working on using appropriate tone for a newspaper among other standards.
 
READING: 
 
Students took the Sign of the Beaver assessment on Friday. We also watched the movie version and compared/contrasted the two. The movie is quite different from the book.
Next week we will begin working on some nonfiction material.

SCIENCE
Students have completed the Gravity assessment and we are will now be working on the solar system such as planet distances, why or why not planets can sustain life, and planet temperatures and reasons for them.
  
Word Study 
 Students took the lesson 20 skill test. Next week's skill lesson is they're, their, and there. The lesson 21 word list is on the blog which can be helpful for the proofreading section.

MATH:

We have been practicing dividing 4 digit dividends by 2 digit divisors with decimals in the dividend, adding zeros when there is a decimal, and decimal powers of ten.
 LANGUAGE ARTS 
Writing:  The Fruit/Veggie election speeches were fun and we all enjoyed the campaign posters & slogans.Tanner Wolters was voted the winner! Congrats!
  We are going to begin writing a newspaper - The Hawkeye Press! It's fun for kids as they will have a newspaper template on the computer and are able to assist each other and work together on the document as 3 students will work per page.  Students will be doing an interview and writing this up for the paper as well as writing an interest article that can be either true, or made up, but sounds true. Through this activity we will work on tone, alliteration, best word choices, main idea/detail as well as the usual revising and editing writing.
READING: 
 
We completed our novel The Sign of the Beaver. Everyone wants a sequel, but there isn't one. :(  Next week we will finish up some activities with this book and review for the test on Thursday over the novel. We will move back into nonfiction after that.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
This week we used Power Point slides to review the settlements of Roanoke and Jamestown. We used personal stories to understand push and pull factors before categorizing actual facts from history that led Europeans to get "pushed" out of their country or "pulled" towards moving to the New World.

SCIENCE
We have been reviewing lessons 5, 6, and 7. Students have had material to study for over a week. The test is Monday.
Word Study 
 Students took the lesson 19 skill test. Next week's skill lesson is using suffixes.  The lesson 20 word list is on the blog which can be helpful for the proofreading section.

FIELD TRIP THURSDAY TO SYMPHONY IN GR.          You have received 2 notes about this event. Cost is $6. Please have this to school no later than Wednesday February 15th.

MATH: Evens Lesson Remembering 5-3,  #'s 1-13

Students have another book chosen and should be reading.

MATH:    
There are math tutorials and practice in the order of lessons in the MATH Tab
We have been practicing dividing 4 digit dividends by 2 digit divisors. This can be tricky and frustrating for a bit, but they will get it! We will add in dividing decimals next week.

 LANGUAGE ARTS 
Writing:  Students began presenting their persuasive speeches for their Fruit/Veggie Election. We will finish on Tuesday. It's been fun to watch and 
listen! :)
 
READING: 
We continue in our genre unit working in groups and as a class reading The Sign of the Beaver. Students are working on comprehension strategies for finding text information, vocabulary, point of view, and how to cite text evidence using a quote.

SCIENCE
We learned about what causes Earth's tides. I showed a power point of a vacation to Oregon and what the tide going in and out looked like at Devil's Punch Bowl. 
We are reviewing moon phases and eclipses and will take the test next Friday. 
 Word Study 
 Students took the lesson 18 skill test. Next week's skill lesson is spelling rules for words with oi/oy.  The lesson 19 word list is on the blog which can be helpful for the proofreading section.

MATH: Evens Lesson 3-10                                                                                                                                                
Book Project:  
Students have another book chosen and should be reading. The project will be sent home this week.

MATH:    
There are math tutorials and practice in the order of lessons in the MATH Tab
We will begin division next week. We discussed on Friday that it's a good idea to practice dividing 4 digits by 1 digit if anyone is not confident with this. We will be learning 4 digit divided by 2 digits this week. There are tutorials and practice in the math tab. 


 LANGUAGE ARTS 
Writing:  Students are finishing up the drafting of their persuasive speech running for Fruit/Veggie of the Year. They have been coming up with their campaign slogans and creating their posters. Students will present speeches Friday and Monday. They are encouraged to bring props such as an example of their fruit or veggie choice and even dress in the color of their food. Students are NOT expected to provide a sample of the food to the class.
 
READING:

SCIENCE
We are reviewing the moon and its phases, and we began our investigation of the solar and lunar eclipses. We viewed a power point of eclipses and students drew conclusions about the order of the sun, moon, Earth during these eclipses. We will continue this investigation this coming week.

This week we completed an assignment covering people in American history who have been Enemies of Slavery from a book with the same title.  We then learned about Roanoke, the first European colony, and studied maps related to the first colonies in America.

Word Study 
 Students took the lesson 17 skill test. Next week's skill lesson is comparatives and superlatives. (good, better, best) The lesson 18 word list is on the blog which can be helpful for the proofreading section.
