Week of February 22nd

HOMEWORK:  
  MATH: No Homework
  READING:  SOME students have a summary and/or the "quiz" to complete about the "History of Yum" article.
The February Book Project is due Tuesday. Students have known this as we talk about it frequently.
 
MATH   - Mrs. Custer
We are just wrapping up our unit on multiplication of whole numbers and decimals.  Because of swimming, Mrs. Blowers will be reviewing the unit with her homeroom, and we are planning the test for the week of March 7.


BLOWERS WRITING:    

  Some students presented their speeches on Friday and we will finish on Monday. We will have a break from writing this week while their is swimming in order to get math in.

READING: with Mrs. Blowers
This week we read paired texts about the creation of Hershey's chocolate and Reese's Pieces. As a class, we again practiced comparing and contrasting as well as writing a compare/contrast piece using our information and signal words. We also practiced pulling the big ideas from the text and writing a summary. Next week students will independently use their skills with paired texts about the creation of the hamburger and taco.

 
Social Studies with Mrs. Custer
Social Studies - It was a short week, but we continued our compare/contrast work on the three regions of the early colonies. 
Science with Mrs. Blowers 
This week we will review concepts and take the first part of the last test in this unit on Friday. Students will be sent Study Stacks by email to study as usual. They also have journal pages to study. We will begin research projects on planets and dwarf planets. Once these are completed, we will take the remainder of the test.                                                          
Spelling:     The Lesson 17 skill is making plural words. We will have this test on Monday. The spelling list is in the spelling tab.

HOMEWORK:  
MATH:      Lesson 12, worksheet 4-9 and the puzzle on the backside of it
READING: Read your February book and work on the project.

 
MATH   - Mrs. Custer 
are taking a quiz on exponents on Monday.  The weekend homework is Lesson 12, worksheet 4-9 and the puzzle on the backside of it.  Next Friday we will take our Math Fact tests (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) for February.

BLOWERS WRITING:    
  Students will present their speeches on Wednesday and Thursday. They chose a fruit or vegetable to do a little research on. They are working on a persuasive plan and draft for their speech persuading others to elect them as fruit/veggie of the year. They will present their speeches, slogans, and campaign posters. We have looked at the standards and proficiency scales for this piece and students will receive presentation, writing to persuade, and conventions grades.

READING: with Mrs. Blowers

  Students presented plays on Friday and did a great job! Next week we will be back reading nonfiction. We will focus on comparing and contrasting, summarizing, vocabulary in context, and comprehension strategies.

Social Studies with Mrs. Custer


We finished identifying and classifying information about the original 13 colonies this week.  We spent Friday investigating primary and secondary sources from Plymouth to see what we could learn from them.  These kids are Great thinkers!
Science with Mrs. Blowers 
We discussed relative distances of planets. We used toilet paper sheets to view the relative distances of the planets from the sun so we could get a better idea. We also compared asteroids, comets, meteors, planets, and dwarf planets. 
Spelling:     Spelling is the same- we needed to let other classes catch up. 
The Lesson 17 skill is making plural words. The spelling list is in the spelling tab and it is a good idea to study it.

  READING: Read your February book and work on the project.

 
MATH   - Mrs. Custer

It was another big week of multiplication in math!  We reviewed area model and partial products as two more strategies we can use when multiplying.  Weekend homework is Lesson 10 (bases and exponents) and reviewing any standards that they are trying again on the second multiply and divide fractions test next Thursday.  The next math fact tests are February 26.

They will present their speeches, slogans, and campaign posters. We have looked at the standards and proficiency scales for this piece and students will receive presentation, writing to persuade, and conventions grades.

READING: with Mrs. Blowers
  As promised, we are working on plays right now. Students chose 1 of 3 plays, read the play and responded to some comprehension questions. This week they will practice and perform plays. We have discussed how fluency and intonation matter to the audiences understanding just as it helps us comprehend in reading.
 
Social Studies with Mrs. Custer
We spent our short week identifying the location and names of the original 13 colonies before we broke into groups to begin reading about each of the 3 regions (New England, Mid-Atlantic and Southern).
Science with Mrs. Blowers 
Our test over moon phases, the eclipses, and tides. These will come home Wednesday after others make up the test.

This week was all about multiplication!  We have looked at three different strategies for multiplying decimals, and will learn even more throughout the unit.  Weekend homework is Lesson 42.

BLOWERS WRITING:    
We will begin writing a persuasive speech on Monday. The kids are very excited about this one! They will choose a fruit or vegetable to do a little research on. Then they will write a persuasive speech about why his/her fruit should be elected fruit/veggie of the year. They will present their speeches, slogans, and campaign posters. 

READING: with Mrs. Blowers
  We will wrap up book clubs by Tuesday. Students will bring home all assignments stapled together. Next we will read and perform plays as I promised them! We will move into some nonfiction after until our next genre unit.
 
Social Studies with Mrs. Custer

We have had fun learning more details about the colony of Jamestown, its founders and its problems.  Using primary sources like maps and lists of travelers, the kids have been able to come up with many insightful questions and thoughts about the colony and its settlers.
Science with Mrs. Blowers 
We completed our unit about moon phases, solar and lunar eclipses, and the tides. Our test will be Wednesday. The students should be studying the study stacks I emailed them and were to take home journals to study the moon phases.  We will continue review next Monday and Tuesday.
Spelling:     
The Lesson 16 test was Friday.We will not have spelling next week, but focus on grammar activities within reading.
