HOMEWORK:

Mrs. Blowers Class has a 1/2 sheet of homework to do with a parent from our Reproductive Health Lesson on Friday.

MATH   - Mrs. Custer
The kids have worked diligently through a variety of long division problems this week.  They seem very confident and are scoring themselves high when we rate our understanding!  We have also done a little bit of review this week to prepare for the M-STEP test that will be right after Spring Break.  Next Wednesday we have our math fact tests and next Thursday is the retest for multiplication for those kids who are trying any standards over again.
BLOWERS WRITING:
Students have been researching 2 websites for their biography report and adding in information from their book. This weekend I will be looking at everyone's notes for a 1st or 2nd time and giving feedback. They will begin a rough draft this week. We will complete biographies after Spring Break.

READING: with Mrs. Blowers
We reviewed strategies and the proficiency scale for writing a nonfiction summary. Students summarized their article into a newspaper google document which made it a little more fun instead of the usual writing it out on paper! They added video clips, pictures and captions about their topic. I shared each newspaper to all students and they read each others articles. We began our new genre unit book, Sign of the Beaver. This is historical fiction and we are back to focusing on literature standards.

Reproductive Health: These lessons will continue through Tuesday.

Spelling:     The Lesson 21 test was Friday. There will be no spelling test next week.

HOMEWORK:

Math: In student planners it says that Activity 5-4 is due. Mrs. Custer realizes that small steps are needed so Activity 5-4 is NOT DUE.

Science: Study Page 31 in your journal for the test on Monday.

Book Projects: Students should finish their biography book. We have talked about this every day. The project will be a biography that will be written in class beginning on Monday.
  MATH   - Mrs. Custer

We started our division unit with powers of ten and working with decimals.  Then we spent a couple of days practicing long division and learning how to deal with remainders. Our homework is just a little long division practice.

BLOWERS WRITING:
Students completed their Personal Narratives. On Monday we will begin discussing the standards and how to research and write a biography.

READING: with Mrs. Blowers
We have been practicing strategies used to figure out words in context. We played a couple games in order to practice as well. We will extend this practice to texts they read by doing some documentation of how they are using strategies.
Students chose an article about an animal to read and discuss with a partner. The goals are to practice strategies for vocabulary and summarizing nonfiction text. Students will type their summaries into a newspaper template to share out to others. We will be adding to the newspaper as this will be tying into our upcoming science unit.

Social Studies with Mrs. Custer

We are finished with the Early American Colonies and have completed a challenging test.  We all did our best and next week we continue through American history! There will be no social studies next week as we are doing our Reproductive Health unit.

Science with Mrs. Blowers
Students presented to the class about their planet or dwarf planet. We will have a test on Monday. Study journal page 31. Tuesday we begin Reproductive Health lessons during science.
Spelling:     The Lesson 20 test was Friday. The lesson 21 skill is homophones their, there, and they're. The spelling list is in the spelling tab.

I spoke with them about what to focus on and taking notes would be a good idea.

MATH   - Mrs. Custer
Friday we took the test over Multiplying Whole Numbers and Decimals. Grades are in PowerSchool and tests for Mrs. Blower's class will come home Monday and Tuesday as I have time to go over them with students individually.
The division unit begins next week.  The best advice we can give is to keep practicing your quick math facts, which will make the long division work that much faster!

BLOWERS WRITING:
Students are working on a personal narrative about meeting a challenge or goal. I shared an example and how I filled out my planning form and my draft. Students have completed their own plan and rough drafts. We are editing, revising and moving onto final drafts this week. I will share more information on writing their biographies this week so they can prepare notes as they are reading their biographies.

READING: with Mrs. Blowers

We read "Attack from Outer Space" which is about meteors, something we have learned about in science. Our big focus has been strategies for figuring out unknown vocabulary in context. We learned and practiced 5 strategies and will continue this. We also worked on finding details in the text and writing complete responses. We again shared what it would look like to get a 2, 3, and 4 on the standard (RI.5.1).

Social Studies with Mrs. Custer

We are finishing up our studies of the early English colonies. This week we learned about the southern colonies, we compared and contrasted each of the regions, and we talked about the different perspectives on land use between the Native Americans and the settlers. Our test will be next week.
